America the land of government controlled health care, amnesty for millions of illegals, and handouts to the lazy and disenchanted. What a precipitous fall from greatness. We as a nation have “progressed” from being the land of “The American Dream” where, hard work and obedience to God was celebrated to becoming a secular, entitlement society, many of us maintaining our existence solely because of our “benevolent” Federal Overlord.
I am not against the government providing a safety net for those who have fallen upon hardship. I am however against the government making people dependent on it for their sole existence. The utopian statists in Washington have created this dependency class which needs to receive handouts to survive. In essence they have turned people into pets of the state, totally dependent for food, housing and a meager existence. What type of life is that to live? Far too many Americans have drunk the Kool Aid believing they cannot obtain greatness. They believe the rhetoric that they cannot make it in this world. They fall victim of stereotyping demonizing those who work hard.
What made America great was our foundation was based upon Judeo-Christian principles and a belief that our unalienable rights come from God. We as a people also believed in our hearts that America was great and our morals and moors were decent. A typical American living in the year 2013 is more likely believe their rights come from government as MSNBC’s resident quack Melissa Harris Perry claims. If one’s rights come from government they come from man. If one’s rights come from man they can be taken away by man.
Think of how lucky you are to be born in a place and an era of time where your life wasn’t predetermined due to your birth. Think of how many people since the beginning of time were born into a particular class and had no chance of upward mobility. If you were born a slave in ancient Egypt there was no chance of escaping the fate of living the life of and eventually dying a slave.
I realize there are many born into poverty in America. Poverty in America is far different from poverty around the world. If you are impoverished in India or The Philippines you may live in a shack with no running water and sanitation. Yes, even the poorest of the poor in America rate much better than the poor living in foreign lands.
Rather than creating a dependent class why don’t we teach those on government assistance a trade and assimilate them into becoming productive members of society?
Mike Rowe is a great man. The host of the television program Dirty Jobs recently created a scholarship program rooted in hard work entitled mikeroweWORKS Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is worth approximately $15,000 and is geared towards any high school senior willing to take the S.W.E.A.T. Pledge (Skills and Work Ethic Aren’t Taboo). The pledge consists of 12 points which are based on common sense and the willingness to work hard.
Programs like this will save America if we are able to drop the sense of entitlement that far too many of our countrymen possess.
